About the content:
American Matthew Morgan has moved to Paris with his beloved wife Joan to spend a happy retirement together. When she dies shortly afterwards, the former philosophy professor falls into a deep hole. Three years later, he still can't get over her loss. In his imagination, Morgan continues to commune with her and promises to follow soon.
His interpersonal contacts are limited to the cleaning lady and the single Madame Léry, with whom he meets once a week for lunch. Otherwise, Mr. Morgan leads a secluded life in the midst of the pulsating cosmopolitan city.
This changes with the young Pauline, whose acquaintance he makes one day by chance on the bus. At first, the shy widower reacts dismissively to the helpful Frenchwoman. But when he sees her again a short time later, he suddenly seeks her closeness. Pauline, it later turns out, reminds him of the youthful Joan. But Mr. Morgan is not interested in a love affair with the sympathetic dance teacher whose classes he attends. Over time, a sincere friendship develops, marked by platonic affection.
Although he regains some zest for life through her, the crushing grief for Joan won't let him go, and Morgan attempts suicide. But he survives, and his adult children Miles and Karen arrive from America. His son reacts suspiciously when he sees Pauline at his father's side. She has become so close to Morgan that he later even confides a secret to her: the reason why he cannot get over Joan's death.
